endearing (adj.) to make dear or beloved; manifesting or evoking affection
For as long as I can remember, endearing has been one of my favorite words. It makes me think of a simpler time and slow living. I love the feeling that it creates and imagine moments like messy hair, coffee in hand, and morning light in the garden. To me, endearing memories are reading a favorite book in the shade of an old oak, tending to the garden on a summer afternoon, walking barefoot along the seashore, picking and prepping wildflowers for the table, practicing yoga in the warm sunshine, the feeling of a stream's cool water flowing around your fingers on a summer day, baking a cake from your grandmother's recipe.
In my life, cloth is not merely something put on the body for warmth or covering, or plainly used around the home. Cloth contains memory, and it creates beauty in simple ways. Memories like wearing a worn linen apron covered in poufs of flour while baking banana bread for your grandmother's seventy-fourth birthday. Beautiful moments like when the afternoon sun peeks through the window, casting mysterious shadows onto a dining table covered in soft linen.
I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all. -Laura Ingalls Wilder
Simple and timeless patterns designed to make your everyday life a little more dear.
In the summer of 2015, I came to a point where I knew I needed to simplify things in my life, my home and especially my closet. The desire to live more simply had been tugging on my heartstrings for some time and I wanted to begin with my closet, which had always been one of my greatest areas of struggle. I gave away over half of my clothing that summer, items that didn't fit my style anymore or were out of style, some of which I hadn't ever worn and some that had been worn to death because they lacked quality. This exercise sparked a desire for pieces that were classic, timeless, made sustainably, and created to last.
That year I started sewing again with my grandmother and as my skills began to strengthen, my personal style developed. Always being inspired by nature, I wanted to create a collection of timeless items that combined two of my favorite things: nature and simplicity. It's from this that a small ready to wear clothing line called Endearing Cloth was born.
Though I sewed a lot for my shop, I didn’t sew much for myself and was regularly purchasing ready to wear clothing. In early 2018, I once again decided to declutter my closet and embark upon a personal project to find patterns to replace the basics I love and sew as much of my wardrobe as possible. Throughout the year, I started to sew a lot more of my clothing, and this led me to fall head over heels in love with the sewing community I discovered online. As my love for the sewing community has grown, something began to spark in my heart—the desire to contribute more. I felt myself desiring to take a step back from the world of ready-to-wear and a step forward into the world of home sewing. I am passionate about helping other sewists in their handmade journey, so it felt like natural gravitation for me to start creating sewing patterns.
Endearing cloth patterns are designed with a desire for simplicity and in the hopes of making the everyday things of life, like the clothing one wears, a little more dear. My intention for the pattern line is that be a resource for both beginner and advanced sewists alike. My hope is to provide patterns for clothing that can be cherished for years to come; that make you feel comfortable in your body, and that are simple and timeless styles appealing to all ages. Endearing moments, those are the moments I hope the clothing made from my patterns will be a part of. Endearing memories, these are the memories I hope you'll make and be reminded of when you wear them.
